Video of a wide open throttle pull. truck still needs tuned but not too bad for a 5,700lb truck

https://photos.app.goo.gl/nQWw4GkQuptCh68R7

The perfect example of why I would never swap a 5.7 Vortec truck to a LS unless it had some form of a supercharger or turbo on it. Stock 5.7 Vortec with a small cam upgrade and headers will absolutely kill a 5.3 with a big cam. Under 4,000 rpm a 5.7 will still make more torque than a 6.0L. My 6,200 lbs Express van moved better with the 5.7 Vortec using a 395' cam, reworked stock 906s upgraded to 2.02/1.60s and thorley tri-y headers. It had 3.73s and Nissan Titan 20 x 8 wheels with P275/50R20s all the way around it in this video. I had the WOT shifts set at 5,150. Vortec bottem end will live almost forever at that RPM. It took you 10 seconds to get from 35 to 80 mph. Mine was about 9.5 seconds 35 to 80. I would hate to see how much weakers yours would run 0-80 knowing the 5.3 is so weak off the line.

I have a 4.125" bore Dart SHP block on the stand I am building now to replace my 5.7 when it dies someday. 4.125" bore and 3.875" stroke should move my heavy brick down the road nicely with the Lloyd Elliot ported Assault racing heads I run on the 350.

To be fair, the tune not being dialed in doesn't help.

True!

Mine was also far from ideal at that time. It was floating the valves above 4,500. Did not know until I had it on the dyno a few months after that video was made. Went from 229 RWHP and 304 RWTQ to 257 RWHP and 310 RWTQ from a spring and retainer change alone. Then up to 272 RWHP and 330 RWTQ running E85.

Those really are pretty good jumps, what size injectors are you running for e85?

Buick 3.8 SC injectors at 58 psi. I think they are 36 lb/hr @ 43.5 psi. 42 lb/hr at the 58 psi the L31 Marine regulator runs at.

At 9.6:1 compression the 395' marine cam was octane limited on 91 octane fuel. With E85 I was able to push the timing up 6-8* across most of the RPM band. I was not less than 20* of timing anywhere and ran 34* from 2,800 rpm and beyond.

my tune is far off, smells really rich at idle and the plugs show it being pig rich as well. I think the truck runs well considering. runs dead even with my friends 9-3 turbo saab and out ran a civic si and new l83 powered truck. all from a 30-35 roll. truck is a dog off the line but being pig rich and a long 4l80e first gear isn't helping. the cam isn't that big, guys reported picking up power and torque from 2500 rpm and up. that's why I chose this cam, truck needs to pull a camper not just sound cool. truck runs stronger now than the vortec 350 ever did. I have done no research but seeing a 6.0 has a 4in bore and longer stroke than a 350 at 3.622in and better flowing heads than any stock sbc head, I don't see a 350 cpi making more torque than a 6.0. the 5.3 does have a disadvantage with the 3.78in bore but still a longer stroke then a 350 with the same 3.622 as a 6.0. the 350 may do somethings better than the 5.3 but the 5.3 also does things better than the 350 cpi. its give and take. my 5.3 does run way better then my 5.7 vortec did, but ported heads, a good cam and 10.56:1 compression with a .040 quench and free flowing exhaust will do that. vs a 9.5:1 350 with stock exhaust and the 096 hd 5.7 vortec heads with the less desirable exhaust port. I think this thing will really come to life when I get the tune done, not only is it pig rich and bench tuned for a stock 4.8 with headers and ported heads but it is also shifting about 1000rpm early. this cam in a stock 5.3 with a tbss intake made 430hp at 6200rpm. clearly I cant tell exactly where its shifting because I havnt hooked up the tach yet but based off sound and the fact the 4.8/5.3 cam is completely off line by 5200rpm in sure its shifting around 5300-5500rpm. we will see where the dust settles though!

What's your DC get to? E85 is an awesome fuel when the flow is available for it. I get a lot more timing into my L83 with it.

Changed the oil yesterday, engine now has just over 3k on it, drained out the Pennzoil conventional and in went Ams Oil signature series, will change at 5k this next oil change and then start taking advantage of the expensive oil and changing at 10k from there out, just converted the whole inside of the truck to led and the cluster to red led. installing my wide band, afr gauge, trans temp gauge and boost gauge now.

Well I was getting ready to call and schedule my dyno tune but I finally hooked up the obd port and have codes for both front o2s heaters, cam and crank sensor codes. so time to diag and order parts, I removed the side moldings too I will post pictures tomorrow. going to hold off on the tune for now, fix current issues, order 340lph fuel pump, 60lb injectors, a misimoto intercooler, hd2 kit and a torque storm tuner blower kit. also a slew of stuff from lmc to get this thing looking good again
