I am sure this ? has already been answered here but my search gave me a bunch of disinformation. ?, would an Edlebroke aftermarket fuel pump work to replace the intank unit on a TBI system since it is low pressure? I hate PITA intank pumps.

Is the Edelbrock fuel pump rated 15 PSI? Normally an in-line pump that isn't gravity fed has a hard time building enough suction to work. You can mount it below the tank but may have issues. The in-tank pumps are a lot better, they get cooled by the fuel and don't have to build up any suction to work. You can use an ACDelco EP381, from a 96 Vortec to ensure plenty of volume and, it's a direct replacement.

The one I currently have on another carbed vehicle is an Edlecrock 17301, rated at 4 to 7 psi, but I would buy one with a higher rating if I knew they would work on a TBi system, I dont know what the PSI requirement of the TBI is anymore, though I seem to remember 10 to 14 psi.

Yes, that's what GM says the FPR will keep it but, you need a pump rated higher to overcome friction loss in the lines and through the filter. As an example the E381 is rated 155L/Hr @60 PSI but works fine with the TBI system.

I searched for 17301, also got hits for 17302 (Diesel) and 17303 (Even lower pressure than 17301)

None of those are going to work. Leave the pump in the tank for best results with fewest headaches, reduced noise, and longest pump life.

You can go ahead and hate the in-tank pumps. However they work and are the proper part, installed in the proper location.
Dont reinvent the wheel. Use the correct part, in the correct location, wired correctly

Replace the fuel pump with a piece of 3/8" tubing curved to lay on the bottom of the fuel tray.

Push the screen onto it making sure that the tube/screen assembly doesn't interfere with the float.

Cut the wires going to the fuel sender and attach them to the new pump. You will likely need to lengthen them.

Mount the pump even with the bottom of the tank (or a smidge lower). Attach the pump to the frame up inside the frame rail for protection.

Happy Motoring!

Thanks Frank, I think the pump you told me to order, the Summit 25100 is the same one used on some ford vans with multiple tanks, Ford mounted low pressure pumps outside the tanks on the frame going to the high pressure pumps on the frame to rum SFI, if I remember correctly, but I had forgotten about that application. I think that is the route I will go.
