your gears are in your axle differential theres a pinion gear and a ring gear, the ring gear is bolted to the carrier on a axis 90 degrees from your pinion gear and your pinion gear is bolted to a yoke that has a universal joint on the outside of the axle connected to the driveshaft. the driveshaft comes out of the transmission hits a universal joint to go downward, hits another universal joint at the axle differential at the rear and is connected to the pinion gear through the yoke

most of the time when people talk of regearing for larger tires it is the ring and pinion in your rear or front axle differential. if you have 2wd you only have one differential

WTF? I just added to your rep for this, & ya went from '0' to '22'. So confused!

Probably the cheapest way to regear is find someone selling an axle that bolts in with the gearing you want. Otherwise, it seems shops in the Detroit area sometimes charge ~500 bucks, +- 200.

Knowing what the truck is used for helps a lot in gear selection.
If you ever pull anything, you'll really want to consider nothing less than 4.10s, although 4.56s would be better.
If you don't drive hard and don't plan to beat on it, 3.73s will be okay. a 315/75 on 16 (34.6") with a 4l60 and 3.73s will get you ~1780rpm at 70 in OD. 4.10's will get you ~1950. It'll be good to keep the gearing close to stock ratio compared to ground speed ( engine speed : ground speed should be close to original) unless you plan to pull/beat on it/drive hard.

definately go with 4.88's. I have 4.56 with 30 in tires right now and its just a little too much gear, 4.56 and 33's would be perfect though. 4.88's for 35's. 5.13 or 5.38 for 37-38's imo.

ive heard 4.56 is overgeared on 35s.. 4.88s are perfect for 37s and 5.13s are good for 38s and higher, etc.

yes man gears would be so worth it for yours not only to save your transmission and gas mileage and millions of other reasons but you only have to re gear the rear axle, being 2wd...Also it's cheaper to re gear the rear b/c it's not as much of a pain as the front axle for us 4x4 guys...Gears for me $1400...Gears for you 2wd $500 maybe. So worth it.

Without gears it'll be doggy and chip away at tranny and your current gear life, bad gas mileage, more problems I mean pretty much every bad thing you can think of especially with towing...Throw some gears in the rear and make the truck actually fast and give it all of that mechanical advantage back.

J you heard that from me but that was just my opinion b/c it ran outta gear around 65 but anything below that and it was awesome...4.56 with a true 35 and heavy wheel like you have would be fine vs mine were just tiny bfg 35's and 17's that didn't weigh nothing.

4.56 and 33's? Really? He would top out @ 60-70 mph lol It'd be screaming too on the highway.
I'm not stating it to be a fact or anything but just going off my experience with 4.56's and bfg 35's with a TBI 350...

yea man right now i can still do about 70 comfortably. Its running 2500-2600 rpm at that speed. Ive tried to push it a little more but it shuts off after that.

Yea I guess we just see it differently running 70 @ that high of a rpm gets terrible gas mileage...I'm right under 2 grand at that speed with 37's and 4.56 and practically double the mileage running under 2000 rpms vs 2500 rpms. Basically 4.56's and 33's would be peppy as hell all around town 0-60 but above 60...Yikes...Road trips would be hell. I mean it's just opinion but I've had mine lifted a looong time and taken many 6 hr drives to and from school. That has all been my experience.
