I know these aren’t your favorite people @Schurkey, but according to Little Shop, and I’ve also read elsewhere that some 454SS’s got the light duty 10b.

I could be wrong though.
The way I read that description, it's the 10" brakes, not the 10-bolt axle, that is important to the fitment of their kit.

It sounds to me like a standard 2WD 14 bolt semi floater with 11" brakes and 454SS shafts would actually be an upgrade over a real 454SS axle, if the OEM 15" wheels will clear the 11" brakes. Not sure about that...
put a 6 lug 14 bolt in a 99 K-1500 classic 15s clear just fine
My '66 Biscayne had 11" drums and 14" wheels.

backspacing was quite different then, but the axle in question isnt that much different from that lol. So win win

Clearly the best solution for the OP is to get a truck 12 bolt from a square body and run it

To me that means a light duty 10b axle.
It would however seem pretty stupid to put that rear end in a 454SS.

" the 14b’s all had 11” brakes. "

Is there an identification stamping on a 454SS axle that positively ID's it? If so I can lay this question to rest. jt

Are both single wheel? What brake option on each (JB5/JB6)? A picture of bare axle housing ends with measurements of backing plate mounting flange hole distances would be great!! jt
This might help with this question. I deleted my sketch. This I would hope is more accurate.

Just spoke with a machinist friend with whom I've dealt with when I was at the dealership, and personally with my own projects. He said he'd be able to redrill my axles and drums. This probably isn't gonna happen right away, as he's going in for hip replacement shortly. Told him there is no hurry as this won't happen till around April when the temps become more reasonable. My hands get cold too quickly nowadays, and these old bones start to rebel also. So, for the time being, gonna hafta deal with the "craptastic" (Shurkey's word, not mine LOL) leading/trailing brakes

...The main reason I'm doing this is for better braking! The 4.8 LS I put in the truck is plenty fast, but the current brakes are really not up to the task of getting me stopped quickly
Well in that case you are spending money in the wrong end of your truck... :) Having said that... I have no idea what your options are in the front. But I'm pretty sure others do.

If your rear brakes don't do anything then there's absolutely a reason to upgrade it. 1500 rear bias is a bit light anyway, even with well maintained brakes.

I"m sure it will not be a total waste going for better rear brakes... But the better the brakes the less weight on the rear axle while braking...

And if there is a load sensing valve in the circuit it will work against all your efforts...It will be saving you from going sideways while braking on wet pavement though, so its a good thing really.

(not sure if there is one on a 2wd because well...GM... but there should be)

Our K1500 has ABS.... on the Rears only...Gotta love GM. :D
