And most fleet salesmen get told to upsell the diesels by the GM who enjoys the $1000/month in maintenance LOL.

Well....it’s all about sales. Dealers dint care what they sell as long as it makes money and you go in for service. I have two diesel trucks. The only reason I got them was because I got them cheap when I purchased them. They were a better deal at the time. They're worth a good amount now as diesels are still popular.

All these wrecker builders selling the hell out of diesels. The Fords are terrible overall, and while the Dodges have good engines, the trucks are hit or miss at best, and eventually everything needs maintenance and repairs, which are killers on the diesels.

Thing is you just don't need a diesel for a light duty wrecker. The gas trucks do just fine. You're hauling around the extra weight of the wrecker bed full-time, and usually under 6K lbs extra whenever you have something on the hook. It just doesn't justify the expense of a diesel.

I had this same conversation with my friend as we were replacing the water pump on his Cummins-powered Dodge. I really wanted a diesel tow pig, but it didn't make sense. The heaviest thing I'll trailer is my Jag, so a half-ton 2wd gas pickup is enough truck for me. I can buy one for what a rebuildable Cummins motor costs.

I consider the 08+ Titan one of the best cheaper trucks out there. Even a Titan from 2004 will pull 9,300 lbs if you get one that had the 3.36 towing gears. That being said Nissan fixed most of the problems they had by the 2008 model year. Bigger brakes, stronger differential with a finned cover and variable intake cam timing on the 07+ engines for a broader powerband.

My mom has a 2011 Pathfinder with the 4.0L V6. Has over 100K on it. Literally half of that has been with a trailer behind it. Have had to put tires, brakes and rear shocks on it. Other than that just oil changes. That 4.0L with the 5spd tows as well as the early 5.3s and that 4.0L/5spd auto has way more get up and go than a 4.8. The 5.6L in the Titan is a hell of alot stronger runner than the 4.0L.

1500HD or 2500HD are also fine trucks.

I drove a titan before for work sometimes. it did have a **** tonne of power and I was suprised that it has the most horsepower in its basic truck than the other manufacturers. I didn't like it though. all the controls were in weird places and a regular 3 point turn was a 6 point turn. I have no idea on the service history or what year it was. my old boss was pretty meticulous with preventive maintenance. the only problems I can remember that were reoccurring were the front wheel hubs, for some reason they would always start squeaking not long after being replaced... I told him get timkin and only timkin bearings... since he didnt do any of his own work he had no idea what timkin even was and said it will be fixed under warranty... which I then said so it will squeak again... no doubt, cheap parts.

I worked for a major wheel manufacturing plant many many years ago. it was brand new, state of the art, robotics galore no one has to pick up a rim kinda plant but it shut down within 5 years due to Onatrios crazy electricity prices. Peoples work stations were air conditioned and being inside the foundry at a workstation was very comfortable. I was contracted in but worked in every area including XRay. we had our own standards but nissan would accept ANY wheel that would hold air however we melted them instead. they had low standards and that has stuck with me ever since.

Yeah my boss's son worked at a Nissan dealership for a few years running the service department. And he didn't have a single positive thing to say about them. I told him that the Titan was one of the top rated trucks in its class and he just could not believe that he said it had to be a rigged study because they were the worst truck he'd ever drove and these are brand new trucks he was driving as a big shot in the dealership. He said he absolutely hated the way they shifted because it made them feel gutless and they got horrible gas mileage. I've always wanted to drive one just because I've heard such great things online but then he has such a negative view of them but from my little dealings with Nissan in the past I don't think I'll ever own one because parts are outrageous and it seems like they're not very reliable either.
Edit: I just remembered I think it was the diesel that he hated so much.
I don't remember hearing anything about the others but I know he hates the company as a whole due to their horrid quality control.

When we were farming and raising cattle I had a couple Ford diesel pickups. The 1st one was in 83 and the 2nd was in 90 (both bought new). They were 3/4 ton HD, 4x4. The 83 was a RCLB stick shift and the 90 was an ECLB E4OD auto. I drove them about 35K - 40K miles/year. With the advantage of running on farm diesel they pretty much paid for themselves. With the price of diesel now, maybe not so much! The 90 had a little bigger engine and was more powerful (175HP IIRC) but, when I was hauling pistachio tree shakers, bin carriers, and forklifts, on a 24' tandem dually axle goose neck tilt trailer (24K Lbs GVWR), from ranch to ranch, I had the skinny pedal floored all the time on flat ground to keep it up to maybe 60MPH on I-5 or Hwy 99, LOL. :33:

haha Furds!

my only recent experience with diesel trucks is not a fair comparison but any means, it was a 2008 ram 6.7 cummins that had all of its emmisions **** removed, bulldog tuner and all kinds of aftermarket blue parts under the hood. it was fun as **** to drive then one day it almost started over heating, apparently they wont actually overheat due to what's actually happening. exhaust gas is infiltrating a very close water jacket on one or more cylinders, cant remember. it's a common issue due to factory studs stretching. there are 2 upgrades, basically $3000 bolts or $6000 military grade bolts! holy ****! the truck was taken to a specialist that only works on diesel ram trucks called the Goat Shop and he really knows these trucks inside and out. I thought it was guna over heat on the drive there but was told nope... it wont. I kept pulling over and purging the exhaust gas out of the system with that stupid cooling system... anyways it turns out someone already did the $6000 bolt upgrade BUT they took a grinder to the head and ****** it up royally! the engine was completely rebuilt and the entire truck was gone through front to back and a bunch of stuff was worked on. my boss soon learned why this truck was $10000 less than any other ram he could find!

someone moved it along quick and it wasnt a young punk either cuz I met the guy one day, curiously asking how the truck was doing. and I told him exactly how it was doing as I'm A DAMM GM GUY! he played it off like oh wow that's crazy.... but I am not stupid. LMAO

within a year of my boss buying that truck it cost him close to 10 000 in additional expenses making the total including the purchase price to 31 000. HAHAHA but my boss justified the cost because it was still way less than half the price of a new one, with the DEF bullshit and all that comes with the newer diesels. theres over 1 000 000 kilometers on his 2007 Ram with the 5.9 Cummins diesel but it has had the front end rebuilt, the tranny rebuilt after it turned 1 million Kilometers and multiple sessions of body work totalling who knows how much!

I have been seriously thinking about looking for a Chevy Express 1 ton van because service bed trucks and just trucks in general are a lot harder to find in good shape but just in my looking for trucks I found plenty of vans so I may have to settle for a van. If I get a van I would like an early LS style motor because they seem to be a lot lower maintenance. I've seen the Chevy Express are actually near the top of some of the reliability charts.
