Hi all,

So in my efforts to fix some leaky axle seals on my 92 k2500hd, I broke off the cross pin bolt in the carrier. I was happy to learn that there's an extractor kit just for this very thing, but after Amazon got it to me I realized that it won't work with this diff. It's a 14-bolt semi-float axle, and from what I'm reading everywhere that means that it should be a 9.5" ring gear.

The kit I got is from Yukon gear and axle, part number YT BE-01. In the picture, the top is the part of the bolt I actually got out and the bottom two are the hollow guide bolts that came with the extractor kit. You can clearly see that my pin bolt is larger (it has a 10mm head if I remember right). The paper insert that came in the tube says that it works with this diff, as well as Amazon and the Yukon website. The insert also says it will work for most diffs with a 5/16" cross pin bolt. I believe mine would be more like a 7/16".

This has me thinking that the diff (or at least the carrier) was swapped at some point. Is there any way I can tell if this was the case, or if anyone knows what the correct extraction kit is that I need to order I'd be very grateful!

Thanks!

I would center-drill the removed piece of your bolt. You're simply using it as a guide for the super-long drill bit.

Get a chunk of aluminum that you can chuck up square and tight in a drill press. Drill and tap a hole that you can put that bolt remnant in. Get a short drill bit the exact same size as your super-long bit. Drill a hole as exactly centered as possible through the bolt remnant. Use it.

I did this procedure last year on my Mustang. Be super careful with the extractors. Mine was a worst-case scenario, and I nearly broke off the stronger extractor in my rearend, figuratively and literally.
