I've heard that if you advance the timing on a TBI truck, the ECM will see it and pull it right out. I believe SomeOtherGuy used to say that a lot.

I got a 96 ecsb Z71 with the 5.7 engine, 4l60 transmission, and 3.73 gears. I run LT 265/75/16 Michelin LTX A/T 2 tires at 40 lbs, and I drive it pretty easy, but I average about 14.5-15 mpg combined, and on my last trip I got 17.5 on the highway. Sorry I couldn’t get a city number, we just don’t have any cities within a good 4 hours.

I have a 1991 C2500 5.7 350 and a 4L80e long bed and went on a 1000 mile trip a few weeks ago. Twice I checked the mileage and both times I got 17 miles a gallon. I had check the timing and it was 2 degree's BTDC and it was getting 14 MPG then. It seems by just setting it to 0 degree's it jumped to 17. I check it twice because I couldn't believe it gained 3 miles per gallon but it did :) Now on my way back home it dropped to 10 MPG but thats to be expected with the load I pickup.

Last few times I checked it it was 19.5-19.7mpg.
I've tried to get 20 but it just won't do it.

Got a rear end for $100 with 3.08s to try soon.

'97 K1500 4x4, 350 cubic inch TBI, 87 octane, everything stock just like it came from the factory in Canada. I like a quiet truck, so it's staying that way, at least for now. (I'm of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought.) Also has 17 inch rims and tires in place of the original 16 inch items.

City driving at 5,200 feet elevation = 13.1 mph.
Combined highway/city at 5,200 to 7,200 feet = 15.3.
I'll know the highway mileage after a vacation trip in October from Albuquerque to Estes Park, Colorado and back.
