You can use the older grille on the newer trucks just fine, the other way around is where you run into problems with bumper fitment.
Either way you go you need the correct bumper brackets and filler panel - 88-93 or 94-98. I suggested OP go with the '94-up grille since he already has the filler and brackets for that style.

I never changed out my bumper brackets when I put the '88 grille on my '98.

I do know for a fact that the '94-up grille does hit the pre-94 bumper (I had to deal with that on a customer vehicle once).

Quads in my 98 with the LMC housings. Back when I had an 88 and kinda sorta crashed it I replaced the core support with one out of a work truck. As expected, everything bolted right up. So how much longer until you make the swap?

I do know for a fact that the '94-up grille does hit the pre-94 bumper (I had to deal with that on a customer vehicle once).
Since the later style grille sticks out more(why the bumper needs to be further out) I suppose the early style grille would fit...but there'll be a gap that someone who knows what they're looking at, would notice.
