All great info, thanks. I think a 5.7L is going to fit the bill here.

Also, don't know how I missed this thread:

There was a complete carbed 366 that was up for auction locally here a few weeks back. It looked to be in fantastic condition. I wanted it, and it went cheap, but I didnt have room for it, or a use for it. It even had factory headers.

There should be scads of OBS 'doner' trucks at local yards you could get any items off that you need. Probably swing a 'package deal' for everything you need maybe even an engine too (one you can rebuild or add some more oomph to if you want). That's probably the path of least resistance and you could consider it 'stock' which would make it a lot easier down the road to order parts/upgrades, etc.

If you're not towing heavy loads, just general driving, I find the 350 in my truck to be plenty good. The torque is down low so off-the-line acceleration is pretty good. Not as good up long hills, but adequate for my use. Comparing to my Dodge Ram Hemi, which is rated a lot more power, for general driving the OBS truck is right in there for general driving. My 4x4 sb/rc with 260k mi averages 16.5 miles (average tank to tank mostly highway, but some city driving ..hand calculated). Straight highway it'll do a little better. But then I've had a few toyota 4x4 mini-trucks that only bested 19mpg on a good day (my average), but at the sacrifice of power/space/comfort/utility. (I still have a soft spot for mini-trucks ...not bashing them)

Good luck!

Weren’t those 366 big blocks all truck engines, i.e., tall deck blocks?

“Factory headers”? Do tell.

We’ve got a C65 tandem w/ grain box at the farm with a 427. I would have to guess it’s age, I’m thinking it was built in early 70s. I wish I had a picture…

My father owned a 1995 K1500 TBI 5.7 4L60e and that truck’s engine combo drove very nicely, better than my 1998 L31 Suburban. Very satisfying throttle response in the lower RPM range.

Yes, and also shunned by most people because of thier small displacement. I bet it would be fine in a light truck.

I've dropped several SB 267 V8's into S-10 and some late 80's Chevys.
It was used from 79-81. It has a 3.50 bore, 2.45 mains, and 2.10 rod bearings. The only Chevy small block V8 less than 305 c.i. to have the 3.48 stroke. I often find them in Impalas and Caprices.

Jeff Smith did a write up of a small block with economy. Got 25 mpg in a full size car.
I think he wrote a buildup of 390/410 hp on 87 octane back in 2001. It was called "Agent 87" and appeared in Chevy High Performance magazine.

Also, I dropped a 366 in my M1008 Square body. With the 4.56 rears it has plenty of acceleration. Pic with the stock headers.
