Now that I know kits are made for this specific install I did some poking around. I've seen mixed reviews on the Ratech kits, some say they're fine and others say they've received the wrong bearings, shims, etc. I found a very complete and nice looking kit from Yukon Gear, linked below. Part number 14088.

It's quite a bit more expensive, but every review I can find on the Yukon kits is extremely positive in regards to part quality and install ease. Plus they come with the nice Timken bearings and races. Will this kit work instead of the Ratech? Anyone have experience with the Yukon kits or just one vs another in general?

EDIT - I've also been reading a lot of reviews on Richmond ring and pinion gears that say they whine pretty bad even after being set up properly. Taking that into consideration, I've changed my choice to these. Strange Engineering/US Gear RS01885410US. According to Strange's website, these might actually be manufactured by Motive.

Any opinions on these? Recommendations for anything else?

DOUBLE EDIT - Well I'm being extremely indecisive. 90% sure that the Strange/US Gear set I was looking it is simply a re-boxed Motive Performance set, so I'm now looking at these instead to save $20 or so.

Also found another install kit from Motive that's half the price of the Yukon and has Timken bearings. They claim it has the bearings necessary for the Eaton carriers but I can't find a definitive set of part numbers in the kit. Does anyone know if it will work for my purposes?

TRIPLE EDIT (That's got to be some kind of a record) - Just called Motive and they confirmed that the carrier bearings in their kit are correct for my application, looks like I'm going with their stuff unless anyone has a better idea. Feel free to chime in with opinions on any of this.

What did you ever go with? I'm just starting to get parts together to upgrade my 10 bolt. I want to go 4.10s with a locker also. Mine is behind a 350 now. I'm going to upgrade the motor later tho so I hope the 10 bolt is strong enuf for that.

Went with this stuff, unfortunately I haven't had a chance to get it installed yet as I've been dealing with other issues.

As mentioned though, unless you're keeping the 10 bolt for sentimental/collecting reasons like I am, I'd just build up a 14 bolt. (Especially if you're going to be upgrading from the 350) I'm just not up for doing that on this truck. It has the V6 and 10 bolt and it's staying that way.

Mine is only 2wd also. I would love to find a 454ss rear, but I don't see that as a possibility. Is there anything I can do to the 10 to make it stronger? I am looking for a 5 lug 14 bolt, but if I can't find one I'll just work with the 10. The 4wd rears are narrower aren't they? And the axles won't switch from 6 lug to 5 lug like the old 12 bolts would, correct?

yes but i really wouldnt waste your time with a 10 bolt, 4wd rears are wider, the axle wont switch that is correct. for a 2wd truck if you have the ability id find yourself a ford 9" or 8.8 or something along those lines instead, dont remember if ford 5 lug is the same though. either way youll end up swapping axle shafts to a moser unit or similar wether ford axle, or 14 bolt.
