The right side "gain" control is usually set to the RCA output voltage of the head unit. That's what the numbers are for.
If the gain is set too low numerically, it could trigger the protection circuit of the amp (shut down) at higher volume levels.
For example, my head unit RCA outputs are 4 volt. I set my amp "gain" at 4 volt input.
I use the other controls on the head unit (sub volume) to increase or decrease bass output.
The other controls on the amp can be set to your preference.
