Just a suggestion, but would warming the paint with a hairdryer first in the area being repaired help with avoiding a crack?

Yes, that is part of the process.

I use the eastwood kit and have had good luck with it. Anything is better than a dent. Definitely heat up the area with a heat gun. I use green cactus glue for my pulling. The glues are rated for the climate you are working in.
