The trucks are solid. Especially 1988-1995, with my personal favorites being 1993-1994 (electronic automatic transmission, TBI engine, "old style" interior) - as long as you take the 6.5 TD out of the equation, it's hard to go wrong. :D

If the engine is a DB2 injection pump model (IE: mechanical diesel) they're not too bad. A lot of the common problems are related to the electronic fuel injection pump. the mechanical pumps are fairly solid, if they don't have lots of miles on them by the time you get it.

Thanks great white , today i talked to somebody which is experienced with the american cars here in Algeria , he told me that he had a lot of old GM trucks , anyway he tells me that automatic transmission's in recent GM pick up trucks (95-99 6.5TD) are different than the model that i want to buy (1990 6.5TD) and i can't fit it in , is that true ?

The 6.5 diesels came with the 4l80e transmission. One of the toughest gm transmissions ever made.

As to what the other s came with, you need to be more specific. The 1500 trucks generally came with either the 700r4 or the 4 l60e. Neither are as good as the 4l80e.

You can install a 4l80e in place of a 700r4/4l60e, but its not a straight bolt in conversion.

I think he's referring to the whole 1995 year model transmission (among other parts) interchange situation, seems he has some spare transmission available from a 1995, and the truck he wants to buy (with bad trans) is a 1990.

If it's a 90, it's likely the 700r4.

I said likely, not for sure.

a 95 gas truck is likely to be the 4l60e.

A diesel is likely to be a 4l80e

Neither the 4l80e nor the 4l60e will be an easy replacement for a 700r4.

All that being said, lord knows what has happened to a truck sold overseas in the 20 odd years it's been around or what it was originally delivered with....

'90 2500 (8 lug, which you can tell by the rear hubcap) will be TH400. Lots and lots of work to swap in a 4L80E regardless of what year it came from. ('91 was first year for 4L80E)

But yeah, absolutely right, no telling what's in it now.

Raji, one thing that could be a plus, if it's a TH400 that's a very very basic (and strong) transmission. It's 3 speed with no overdrive. I'm sure things may be very different where you're at but over here it's a very inexpensive transmission to rebuild and any transmission shop can knock them out with their eyes closed.
