We had some locking toolboxes on the side of an old f250; being able to pull the key out and leave the engine running while you grabbed what you needed was really handy in winter.It hasn’t gone to the point where it just FALLS out, but I can leave it running and lock the doors

My cousin's '65 Chevy ll Nova was like that. He was always starting it, then taking the keys out and putting them back in his pocket....IIRC in the early 60s that was common in some GMs, maybe others. I think it changed in 1966. I was young then but remember it pretty well.
