Help with temp gauge.

Have a 89c1500 with a 358 (with aftermarket headers) Temp gauge is giving me a false reading. Was doing fine until this morning. It usually does 210-220 before dropping down. But now it doesn’t stop at all it just keep on going to 260. It jumps up when I turn the heat on. I turn the truck off then back on (not running) it goes back to operating temps. But a second later it rises right back to 260. Sometimes it flicks back to 210 but flicks right back to 260. Everything on the truck is brand new. I just got the engine rebuilt and not trying to build it again.

I would start by checking for a loose wire, or maybe replacing the temperature sensor in the head if you don’t find any problems with wiring.
