Not a Vortec but I had a '95 TBI long block swapped into my truck with 145k on it. I started using Valvoline SynPower 5W-40 (now 0W) since day one with that engine. Two years and 20k miles later, no leaks. Doesn't burn any oil either. I also use MotorKote and Wix XP filters, changed every 5k. I run that same oil in all of our vehicles, my '88 Town Car, her '92 C1500 350 and our '92 F150 with a straight six. No oil leaks or burn from any of those. Except the Town Car. Ford couldn't figure out the right rings to use so they all burn oil.
