I have to wonder if the "restrictions" were done as part of reducing NVH (noise, vibration, harshness). The small snorkel opening would act as a venturi to speed up the air flow and maybe that was a requirement for the resonator boxes (think: blowing across the neck of a Coke bottle). I had a new model '94 S10 with the TBI 4.3L. Thing had an intake snorkel opening *smaller* than the air box opening on my DR350 dirt bike. Along with the tiny opening were a couple of resonating chambers molded into the snorkel. It was a CAI though ...

Re the 'missing' duct. Where the filter box goes through the inner fender is higher than where the air enters the fender cavity. Without a connecting duct, the fording depth is increased - no?

In another scheme the 814 seems to be connected to the resonator isn't it?

If the schematic you posted is from an eBay listing I wouldn't trust it. Especially if there are no pictures of the actual item in the listing.

The site I linked to (Nemiga Parts Chevrolet) is very accurate in my experience. You can't purchase anything from there, but it's a good reference that doesn't erase part information from the schematics when they're discontinued like many others do.
