I briefly looked at a first or second year LS, last year. Unfortunetly, it had already been messed with, and I needed something that was reliable more than a project.

That part does indeed suck. There's no easy way to do it.

Mine's still going after 22 years though. I gripe more about the 90k timing belt changes.

Timing belts are pretty easy to do, get a FSM or Chilton manual for it.

Don't skip it. It's a 26 year old belt on an interference engine. I actually found the cheapest place by me was the Lexus dealership, but these days I don't know.
