Having the TBN will let you know when it's time to change the oil. Anything above 1.0 is good. Many oils start at ~8 - 8.5. And having say 6 vs 3 doesn't mean it's better. As long as it is above 1 your golden. Most oil today can easily go 10K.

Most oil today can easily go 10K.
Given sophisticated feedback-fuel-injection (no fuel contamination, minimal bore wear leading to minimal blow-by) and overdrive transmissions (minimal engine RPM leading to lower engine wear) oil can go WAY BEYOND 10K under at least some driving conditions.

My '03 Trailblazer suggests oil changes based on the oil life monitor at around 13K. I took samples, oil was "fit for further use". So I changed the filter, topped-off the oil, and now I don't change oil until 26K. The oil samples are still saying "fit for further use". But I can't bring myself to try 39K. It's a psychological thing.
