Les Schwab. Well, maybe. Im wearing a hat thats older than the average schwabby so take it with a grain of salt.
If you are pretty sure its a rear problem, take a look at your backing plates. The shoe frames dig deep grooves into the plate and make them hang in wierd ways which will wreck the drums real quick.
Even the best shoes often have nasty burrs on the frame which can cause the same problem.
They hang and pulse untill you give em a pump and the springs pull them loose.
The backing plates are pretty thick on these trucks. Weld em and grind em in place.
Just take your time, dont melt the axle seals

He had a legitimate complaint, A shop wanting $150.00 to surface a set of drums. This is one of the reasons that folks are shopping on line.
Not every one on this sight is a business owner, many are every day folks that like/prefer to work on their own vehicles. Also local parts stores do not always offer the best prices for automotive parts to customers that walk in off the street OR have them in stock. Most times in order to get better pricing these local parts stores require a business account or a minimum monthly purchase amount., another reason folks buy online.
Yep! and id like to add, a lot of guys posting these questions are younger with a wife and kids and just need the damn thing to run so they can go to work in the morning.
Thats why I joined this forum.
To pass on some of the tricks that get you down the road.
It kinda cracks me up to see people get all snobby and pebble beach over old Chevy trucks.

I mean, and as I stated, if the guys at Les did EVERYTHING and I didnt have to lift a finger, I get why its $150. I'd charge that too.

I dont see anything like you are describing, however. The plates look pretty unscathed. I'm guessing the drums just need to be turned.

Did you confirm this was your drums? I got the same issue with moderate to hard braking. The pedal vibrates and whole truck shudders.

So all this is proving to me is buying auto parts online is stupid. You have a problem locally you walk back in and get back on road same day. Now your stuck arguing with some moron that knows nothing about auto parts just pushes computer buttons. Get them local and stop being a cheapwad. Customer service is worth way more than the savings you get from RockAuto.
Yep. The best thing you ever do for yourself is to get to know which parts guy knows his ****.

And you cant do that over the internet.
Maybe Im just old but I want to pull the part out of the box and look it over before I pay for it

Didnt realize how old this thread is!
It could be the drums but it could be many other things too.
Warped rotors, Heat glazed rotors or drums sticking caliper, crusty caliper hardware etc..
And, quite possibly the most overlooked source is the rubber flex lines going to the brakes.
They rot from the inside.
So when you apply the brakes, the hydrualic pressure is high enough that is blows the rotted rubber compound open and moves the caliper piston.
But when you release the brake pedal, there isnt enough back pressure or return pressure to move that blockage out of the way so the caliper stays partially engaged and causes drag and heat glaze.
It basically creates a one way valve.
And those lines never get replaced.
And the hard lines really really never get replaced.
Hers how it goes. calipers, pads, rotors, shoes, drums.
****** shakes two weeks later.
Pads, shoes bleed.
****** shakes.
Cut off in the rain.
****** ass swaps.
Pads, rotors drums shoes.
****** shakes after a week.
Dollar store, for sale sign.
If you.are going to do brakes on a damn near 30 year old truck.
You need to do all of it.
Stem to stern.
It isnt very complicated either.
Its just under the truck work.
But it isnt sexy.
Nobody cares about your awesome rebuilt factory brakes.
In all of racing and hot rodding or whatever screwey **** you have in mind the first thing to do is to figure out how to stop whatever crazy thing you started.
Thats the rule for drag cars.
Thats the rule for nuclear reactors.
Thats the rule for drunken hooker marriages in Vegas.
Its all about them brakes.

I have warped drums on both trucks. I only feel it empty on the dually and it's worse since the GG rear shoe install. Luckily, it's rarely empty, so it's ignorable. The 1500 seems to have gotten less bad. Pretty sure the rest brakes are about done and in need of a total redo. With normal rear shoes, you don't feel the drum shake with initial input. You have to get into it for a second or so before it sets in. At least that's my impression having fixed neither truck.

Not all of us can simply go to local shop-especially when we live abroad (UK)where our trucks are not supported and are rare. So rockauto is the only solution especially when it comes to shipping prices. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to enjoy our pride and joy.

Gotta love it. RA will ship to Italy but not to CO!
