To resonate or not to resonate that is the question....

My 90 5.7 drones in the cab pretty bad at that 55 to 60 MPH range. It's a little better above that but on a long trip it gets kind of old.

Would a resonator be an advantage or just change out the muffler for a quieter one? IIRC it has a Flowmaster on it. Three inch inlet with dual outlets which exit behind the RR wheel. There is no cat in the system. Running the short headers which directly replace the stock cast manifolds.

Dump them further outside the body. Putting resonators on or changing the muffler will change the sound, but it's droning because the sound is getting trapped. It'll still drone, maybe not at the same speed, but drone it will.

The exhaust dumps behind the right rear wheel as it is in the stock location. I suppose i could add some chrome tips to the pipes to push them out a bit farther???

Wait, is it already dumping outside the body line?

Sounds like it has a stock style exit.

@kenh , if you knew which Flowmaster you had, that would be helpful. I know the Original 40s I had on my Vortec 454 had some drone, but not too bad. The Delta 50 has zero drone. Super 44 surprisingly ain't too bad, at least on a 5.3. My Vortec 350 had zero drone once I had a Magnaflow installed rather than the craptastic glasspack it had. Made me a firm believer in Magnaflow.

I'll take a look later and post back. The truck came to me like it is so never really paid a lot of attention to exactly what it is.

How rusty is the muffler? Should be a stamped/dot peened part number on the outlet side. You can use that to cross reference what you have.

While I agree that Maggie's sound great, in my experience there's much more to exhaust sound than just muffler choice. If the exhaust is already out past the body line so that sound waves are escaping rather than bouncing around, then a muffler change will likely help. If it's not, then moving it out is the cheapest and easiest way to change the sound.
