Sounds like a pretty mild cam to me. I would think, if you stayed off the skinny pedal, listen for detonation, and pull the plugs periodically and check to see if you are getting knock, running rich/lean, you could probably drive it for a while without a tune. You'll know right away if it doesn't sound right ie. lean pops out the intake, hesitation, idle cold and hot, etc.

BTW - The builder should have degree'd the cam and, like mentioned by @Gramps, have the cam card. Has the engine been broke in yet, big deal!
Motor has not bin run was built five months ago and never installed still in crate.

I got quoted $3000 to have a stock cam put back into this motor before I install it. There's noway id dare to try a cam swap myself that's a job I'll pay someone that knows what there doing but $3000 for a cam swap seems way to much.

You're right, that's WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too much! You could build an entire motor for that. Couldn't find that exact cam on Comp's website, really need to know which grind you have to be able to give you truly sound advice. I have a 266/270 duration roller cam in my 4.3 (.210/.215 @.050" lift- this is the number you really need) and it desperately needs a tune! Idle is rough, power is definitely not what it should be, but it does run as my daily driver with all sensors functioning, no codes, and no real running issues. That said, I drive it quite gently, still haven't really pounced on it to see how it does, not until it's properly tuned. Assuming all other valve train parts are acceptable, a cam swap should be a few hundred, not a few thousand- really hate seeing people trying to rip off others based on them not knowing. Hope this helps

$3000 to swap a cam into a motor on the stand? Find a new shop or watch a bunch of Youtube vids.

So I purchased a completely rebuilt motor for my 98 the motor is from a 97 it's a 5.7. The guy had it gone through completely and did some upgrades and updates mainly stuff like high output oil pump a timing chain and gear upgrade molly rings upgraded main bearings. He had a hydraulic roller comp cam 460/460 lift, 280int./280 exh duration, installed. Problem is I live couple hours from the nearest tuner would I be able too install the motor and drive it around as a daily driver and till I get time to take it in and get it tuned?

Another option would be to have blackbear tune your ecm for that and then you would be go to go.

From what I have seen in the past - you actually have no plans to ever get this tuned, so you are actually seeing if these guys will tell you to run it forever as is. Then you will complain that your untuned motor is slow again haha. Hopefully I am wrong.

Well plans changed if I was putting a stock motor back in ya in my opinion a tune specially on this old of a truck is a waste of money but now that I bought this new motor with a cam in it I don't think I really have much of a choice at this point. But we are getting busy at work starting to get ready for seeding so I wouldn't have time till seeding is done to run my truck to the city to be put on a dyno and tuned. From what I gather I can run it for time being as long as I keep out of it as I do anyway but yes it will be getting tune with this motor.

I will believe it when I see it. I still think that you have no plans to ever get this tuned, and this thread was your way of asking the experts what would happen if you don't.

For a few hundred bucks, blackbear could send you a new ecm that would work well. It wouldn't be quite as good as an in person tune (if the tuner is ok), but it would still be really good. No down time, easy swap, inexpensive. This is what most rational people would do in that situation, but here again - I doubt that you have any plans to tune this...

Think what you want It's a cammed 350 it's getting dyno tuned at
Performance Plus in Saskatoon Saskatchewan so as the motor is installed and the first chance I get they have a good name and there expensive but from what I've bin told there the best in Saskatchewan. Like I said if I was putting a stock 5.7 back in no would not get it tuned I would not bother wasting my money this is a cammed 5.7 it needs to be tuned and it WILL BE GETTING TUNED ! I've already had my question answered. RI Chevy guy gave me the answer I was looking for. I will post dyno results when it's done I'd say around June.

Before you toss that engine in your truck, I would buy some engine oil break in additive and put it in the truck before you crank it up. Also, be sure to hold the RPM's up between 2000 and 2500 RPM's for 20 minutes, in case your engine builder is less than honest and you have a comp 280H flat tappet (which is the closest thing to the specs you have mentioned). Hate for a cam lobe to go flat in short order and you stuck with an engine that needs a cam swap anyway.
