9.25 is the clean one, 8.25 is the dirty one (not my pics, I nicked them off the 'net)

when you take the hub center off, you have a GM corporate 14 bolt full float axle.

If your differential cover has 14 bolts and does not look like the picture above, you have a 14 bolt semi floating axle.

If your differential cover has 10 bolts, you've got the little brother that GMT400's came factory with.

The confusion arises at the 2500 level. GM made a "half step" model with the lighter GVWR 2500's. BAsically, it's 1500 with a little heavier spring rate and the 14 bolt semi float read axle. The rest of the truck is pure 1500.

The "all in" 8600lb GVWR 2500 is nearly a 3500 mechanically....for the nit pickers, notice I said NEARLY.....:)

Great info there BJ!

Just to add: The "Half Step" 2500 that BJ mentioned is our F44 packaged 1500s. I think GM realized the confusion at one point and simply just started throwing 1500 badges on these so called 2500 LDs

Now i have a question for you BJ would the 8600 GVWR 3500s be considered 3500 Light duties then kind of another Half step like they did with the 2500LD/F44 1500?

Hey guys I have a question. I drive a 98, 2500 with a 350 vortec, extended cab, 4x4, long bed with a 14 bolt rear end. The seal around where the drive shaft ties in to the rear end is leaking. I took it to get fixed and when i got it back it was leaking again the next day. I took it back and when I got it back it did good for a week and now is leaking again. Would yall happen to know what the problem might be and how to fix it for good?

Full float axle or semi float?

I pretty sure its a semi float

You have to at least pop a rear cap off and look at the center.

Or, stick your head under the bed and look at the axle input shaft. If the housing around the yoke bolts on, it a full floating axle. If there is no bolt on section around the input, its a semi floating axle.

That 9.25 and 8.25 front diffs look like they would bolt up the same, are they interchangeable? The reason I'm asking is because I was going to re-build my 8.25 front diff and re-gear it. I would rather have a 9.25. If they do bolt up, I'll go buy a 9.25 front diff.

My guess would be pinion bearings are shot, this allows the pinion to flop around and tears up the seals quick
