A used trans is a gamble, and a rebuild kit is about $500, so right at $2k if you rebuild it yourself, or have access to someone like the op.
And you still gotta find a way to control it.

At 47K documented miles, I will throw it in. Fluid is perfect and the unit looks new. I have pulled 6 or 7, TH400s and 4L80E/4L85Es out of the wrecking hard, cleaned them up, changed the fluid and filter as well as the seals and they have held up fine.

I am going with an E67 and 58x for control. I am relocating LS coils in front of the engine and going DBW.
