currently got a 1996 k1500 350 vortec with the 4l60e transmission but the transmission is out. Should I just rebuild it or buy a re manufactured 4l60e? Both will cost around the same with same prices on labor too
Rebuild what you have. Then there's no confusion on getting the right bellhousing, etc. Plus you have someone local to talk to about selecting internals and warranty issues. Places that sell pre-built transmissions usually have very specific installation requirements for the warranty to remain valid. Rebuild is always the better option IMO.
Picking the rebuild shop should be done carefully. I'd ask around, especially asking "car guys" about which shops do good work. Go to car shows or the local track and ask before selecting a shop.
Finding a reputable trans rebuild shop can be a daunting task.... I couldn't find one in my area that most liked. I ended up with a GM reman almost 3 years ago for my 97. 3 year, 100,000 mile warranty. And if it goes bad, I can have it towed to any GM dealership for a replacement.
