I've never really understood the wings. I bought a new Subaru WRX. Was gonna get an STI, but hated the wing...

If you drive like Ken Block then the wing is necessary. A WRX Sti driven as it was intended, 100+ mph out on a open desert road, the wing is necessary. Anything race related, the down force created is very necessary. On a GMT that was owned by a ricer, not so much, and looks quite ridiculous!
