I was wondering if I should change gears? I think I have 3.42s. I have heard people say that 3.42s are unreliable or whatever.

There not unreliable just high. So when u put bigger tires on you want a lower gear ratio. 4.10's are perfect for 33's but 3.73's are fine to. you don't absolutely need lower gears but they will save your transmission in the long run. And you'll regain power loss from bigger tires.

The opposite is actually true of reliability. If you had something as outrageous as 5.29's (common on something like a Toyota with bigger tires) the gear set would actually be weaker.

3.42's, 3.73's, 4.10's there isn't going to be any difference.

actually 3:42 is unreliable in the 9.5 rear, for whatever reason that ratio tends to eat pinion bearings and have been known to snap the head of the pinion off

you would think that as the pinion gets smaller but the smaller pinion actually has to work less to move the truck so it is less stressed, a bigger pinion (lower ratio) has more stress on it and fails easier along with other driveline components
