5.7 98 k1500. Truck doesn't burn any oil, but I hear ticking near the valve covers. It's currently running a 10w40 high mileage oil, but I heard it when it was on 5w30 also. Thoughts on what it is?

Sounds like an exhaust leak

I'd second that.

Use a stethoscope or piece of heater hose to narrow down the noise. Dark streaks of soot around an exhaust joint can also be an indicator.
