Have you had any ECM tuning? That makes a huge difference. Adjusting your shift points to match your tires, removing a good chunk of the TQ management and abuse mode, Changing the 3rd and 4th gear lockup settings... Get a hold of someone like Black Bear. They do a great job, but they are a little slow with the tuning process. That will make the biggest power difference.

And if you have done some tuning, well never mind :)

Yes I once had a 05 Z71 Chevy 1500 with a 5.3 and 3.42 gears. I added a 6” lift, 35s and a blackbear tune and it really helped a lot! Then I swapped in 4.56 gears and the truck was a monster and no worse on fuel! It was just so gutless before the gear swap that it sucked fuel trying hard to accelerate. Once it was re geared it was effortless to accelerate.

You absolutely could get 8-lugs with a 4.3L and 4L80E both TBI and Vortec. Very common in the 2500 vans even. In the vans they only came with a 4.10 gear which was an automatic G80 option as well. I have snagged several 4.10/G80 geared 10.5s from them.

did not know that I have to ask why they would do that and I would think they would very rare
Fleet trucks amd vans mostly. I have driven a few of them, with the 4.10 gear they are not as gutless as one would assume. The base engine even in the P30 box vans was the 4.3L. The old UPS P30 dually box trucks had a 4.3L with a Q-Jet and a 4spd manual for years. They were carbureted until about 90-92.

wow that is some interesting info there thanks I thought 85 was the only year for the q-jet 4.3
85-86 in the trucks and vans. The P series were carbureted until about 1988-1990 depending on where it was headed. The old G-vans had carburetors even in 87-88 when they were over 8,600 lbs too. Catless true duals on them too.
