Back before when, I used to line up the tip of the dist. rotor to the first cyclinder on the divers side. That was after i found TDC compression stroke

doesnt matter where the rotor is, in fact, you could make the rotor facing the firewall if you wanted too, as long as the terminal its pointing at is the one you use for #1

hello guys and gals.. i know its a very old post but i thought i would put here that i did get the truck going it was around 05/14/11 and she has been running like i top besides one day i broke a tie rod end and both ball joints on the passanger side.... lets just it was one hell of a ride..
