On a somewhat related note, I used a V8 torque converter when I 4L80E swapped my V6 truck as that's what came with my junkyard 4L80E. (Donor truck was a '97 C3500 with a 350.) It works just fine, but I feel like a slightly looser converter would be beneficial. After the swap I can't really get the truck to do a burnout on dry pavement, it would do so almost effortlessly with the 60E and V6 converter.

Makes sense as the v6 converter would rev more before "dropping the clutch". Of course, to do an apples to apples comparison you'd have had to use the v8 converter on a 60e, as the 80e takes more power (which you are already lacking) to turn.

Agreed, although I must say overall I've been very happy with everything except the low RPM power after the swap. Once the truck is off the line, the difference between the 60E and 80E seems to be very minimal.

If/when the 4L80E ever needs rebuilding I plan on switching to a V6 converter to see if that helps any.

Just regear it to something like 3.73 or 4.10s.

You have 3.42?

While it's true that my 1500 and 3500 have the same cooler, I did snag a bigger one from a 1500 Suburban at the junkyard that was riding on factory mounts. 3500 is getting that one. No idea how it got that but it did.

Yup.

Hopefully doing that some time in the future as well, maybe in the process of a 14 bolt swap. 4.10s would pep it up a good bit I imagine.

Don't forget the 80E has different gears than the 60E too.

On that note, the V6 in my truck likes the OD in the 80E much better. Cruises a few hundred RPM higher than the 60E, but as a result it stays in the power band better and doesn't downshift on inclines nearly as often.

My van cruised better with the 4L85E even with 3.42s and got better when the 3.73 geared 9.5 went in. When I put 5.13s in the 14 bolt unloaded the van would easily pull OD at 30 mph and tow my travel trailer uphill in OD. Just short of 3,000 rpm at 70 with the 5.13s. GEARS made all the difference in the world. I already knew it wouldn't hurt my highway running having gears. When it had the 60E in it and the converter started failing used to run in 3rd even at 80 mph to keep from setting the P1870 code. Same fuel mileage in 3rd as OD when it had the 3.42s. At ~3,000 rpm at 75, just roll on the throttle a little and it gets up and goes, no waiting for a downshift when you pass on a 2 lane.
