The first sign of a cob job was the Holley carb, single plane intake and shorty headers. Obviously there was no forethought into the build of the powertrain. If the engine doesn't smoke and has good oil pressure you should be good to go with a re-seal. Do you know if it was a crate motor or a homebuild? That NV3500 was never going to last long behind a 383.
All you can do now is make it better and there are plenty of good wrenches on this site that will help you make that happen.

I appreciate that.

I knew nothing about SBC when I bought it. this is a whole new journey. this part of the story is almost 2 years ago. I'm still working on the timeline digging up photos ect.

Stay tuned for more of the journey. I will have answers to most questions along the way. I'm no expert at this point but I've learned a lot.

Part IV .... Why I call her Lucy.

as I started to unplug wiring, and drain the fluids in preparation for disassembly, most everything looked fine, the oil was still newish, coolant was still green. I pulled the starter and realized the starter cables were badly corroded and twisted, corrosion going deep into the cable (added to the mental list of parts).

I started to drain the fluid on the transmission, put a socket on one of the bell housing bolts to see what size it was, and turned it by hand. Fantastic, a loose bolt, then another and another. Half of the bellhousing bolts were barley hand tight. transmission mount was so goosed up and the rubber was rotten. the crossmember bolts were all tight (small victory). I dropped the transmission now the clutch and flywheel. clutch pressure plate bolts were a 70/30 on tight / loose. you can see the pattern here. just about half of all the bolts I was touching or removing were loose (Lucy)

Part V... 383 Or not to be.. that's the question..

The engine info I found in the receipts was a shipping label. The engine was built by AR Racing LLC, around April of 2013. I don't know how much of the engine I got was part of that build. If it was a short block only or a complete long block.

I broke it down to the short block,
I didn't find any markings on the crank
eagle I beam rods
Speed pro -5cc pistons 4.030
block casting number says its from the 60's
Melling oil pump

Looks like a 383 to me. I was pretty happy at this point. it was an unknown, Known.

I finally found a part number on the heads. RPC s4400 heads. 205's
when I ran the calculator, compressed gasket thicknesses, head chamber, piston cc. should put this at around 10.80 :1 compression.

the cam was, the best I can tell, a gm performance cam.

3 of the rockers were no good, no bent pushrods that I could tell.

I did however find more loose bolts, 2 head bolts on the drivers side were not torqued properly. timing cover bolts were half loose intake manifold bolts were either loose or under torque. exhaust manifold bolts loose.

That's my Lucy...

More to come..

Part VI What is that M EFFEN SMELL???

while I am deciding on parts, and waiting on parts. lets investigate the smell.

I've cleaned the interior probably 3 times by now, and every single time it started to smell again in the next few days.

its time to start removing things until I discover what is causing the issue.

I discovered the seat was probably original but it had the original and this black cover on it. the arm rest wouldn't go all the way up (that bugged me).
lets leave the seat out and see if that solves the issue.

it was better but still not good enough.

Continuing with the theme.. RIP IT ALL OUT!!!

Notice in the Picture the amp in the lower left corner? it was ultimately what tipped me to look at the rear glass. because it also smelled, who smells an AMP? this guy I guess...

Unfortunately I found the problem, the rear windshield was leaking bad enough that there was mold growing under the rubber floor mat. causing the elusive stink..

MYSTERY SOLVED!!! now lets fix it..

I spoke earlier about the loads of aftermarket wiring and general hackery in the truck. I fell in the the never ending pit of doom called "WHILE YOUR'RE IN THERE"
