my 95 2500 has the nv3500 and its a 8 lug. If i remember correctly the nv4500 was put behind the 6.5 and the 7.4 not the 5.7 like mine has
I realize this reply is pretty old but since the thread got bumped I just now saw it. This post is misleading in so many ways. You need to look at the SPID label in your glovebox for the transmission code as the light duty 5 speed will not have come in your 8 lug 2500. If there's one in there now, it's because someone swapped it in. 8 lug 2500's would only come with the heavy trans regardless of engine option.

The nv4500 I just bought came from a 1995 with a 350 (Unsure of 3/4 or 1 ton, but it did come with a 350)

Yeah dunno why people post confusing stuff like that other reply. NV4500 is not determined by what engine is in the truck; they absolutely without question came behind a large number of 5.7's. The engine is not the determining factor as to whether the truck came with the light or heavy manual trans. It's the tonnage of the truck. Anything lighter than an 8 lug came with the light duty trans unless specifically optioned for the heavy trans; anything 8 lug (or above like the 3500HD) came with the heavy trans and ONLY the heavy trans. Regardless of engine.

It could have been swapped with something else. I have the mw3 rpo code. I thought the NV4500 code was mt8.

Could you post a clear picture of your SPID label? Feel free to block the last unique #s of the VIN if you have privacy concerns, but please leave the first 11 visible.

Oop, nevermind - went back and looked at your previous post. Your 1995 model would not show MT8 as that's the older version of the nv4500. MW3 is the newer version. Still an nv4500.

Thanks,
Richard

My experience is most of these transmissions, NV3500, NV4500, 700R4, 4L60E, 4L80E etc are all good transmissions when serviced as recommended by GM on STOCK or near stock vehicles. My 5LM60 is going on 270,000 and is almost 30 years old. Cant be that bad of a transmission. And with the autos, how many 4x4 and Suburban owners do you think actually changed their ATF fluid at 30,000 miles on basically a new vehicle. Many of us are 2nd 3rd or even 4th owners of these trucks. Hard to know how it was cared for and easy to forget the autos back then came with the old Dexron III fluid which had no where near the life as what has been used in the last 15 years or so. Across various GM platforms (trucks vans, LT1 Caprice police cars etc) millions of 4L60s have proven their durability and longevity even in severe duty environments when serviced properly.
