92 4x4 NV4500 built SBC ext cab short box long term build!

I’m a 41 year old car and truck nut and I’m excited to show off my new find! Back when I was in my 20s my daily was virtually the same truck except auto not manual. Since this was my daily driver I kept it pretty stock however rebuilt it front to back over the years. I’ve never had a truck payment so this truck made me a lot of money over the years. Eventually I moved onto a 2005 GMC 1500 with a lift and then lastly onto a 2012 GMC 2500 HD.

So here is the plan. Step 1, get the cab corners and rockers cut out and weld new metal in. I have the tools but I’ve never done this before so it will be a learning experience. The truck runs and drives but isn’t insured so I’m leaving it on my trailer which is stored 1 km from my house for easy access.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

My girl owns the 90 K2500 6 lug in my avatar.

Do yourself a favor and as you go along in the build, you can also update your signature.

I’ve been looking for one of these 2500 light duty versions with a 5 speed for a long time! They couldn’t have made many in this combo! This one was a farm truck, it’s got its dents and dings, the interior is farm like, but it’s not too rusty to restore.

For those who aren’t familiar with the 2500 6 lugs in these years they are basically a 1/2 ton with stiffer torsion bars and an extra leaf spring. These also feature the 14 bolt semi floater rear end, this one has a 3.73 open which will get a clutch style possi upgrade. I’m keeping it factory height but I will rebuild the spring packs and anything else that needs it. Anything that works well will be left alone. The truck drives great, the TBI engine, NV4500, t case and front and rear diffs are functioning well. 4 high 4 low, 2 wd no issues there.

Eventually I will drop in a fresh SBC 4 bolt main which I built last year, it’s still fresh and hasn’t been started yet. It’s a fully machined 60 over balanced engine with forged rods and pistons with a cam good for 2600-6000 and vortec heads with a carb intake. Looking to use a Holley EFI and possibly a GT-45 turbo that’s on the shelf. But for now the TBI engine can stay for a while.

The two major items that need to be addressed are the interior and the rockers and cab corners. Once I get those items done I will take the truck for a windshield and an inspection to check the condition of the front end parts etc. Once the inspection is done I can decide if I will rebuild the whole front end or just what’s worn out. Same deal for the brakes. A possi unit will be one of the first upgrades once it’s driving.

For daily drivers I have a lifted 2001 Yukon which I’ve pretty much rebuilt over the past few years. And for truck use my 2012 2500HD so not a big rush to get this truck completed. I’m blessed to have a nice shop, with a lift, but the lift is tied up with my Buick Skylark at the moment which is getting an engine upgrade. A few pics.

Attached is a pic is my daily 2001 Yukon SLT fully loaded, 5.3 long tube headers, 2” duals, 6” lift, swapped to 4.10 gears from 3.73 and 35” ATs.

Next is my 2012 Sierra 2500 SLT, 6.0 long tube headers, 6 speed auto, 2.5 true duals, 6” lift, also 35s.

And my 70 Skylark with twin turbos

First pic is the RPO code, second pic are the 16x8 wheels I just bought for this truck the previous owner had them on this 2 door Tahoe and I think they will look sharp on the 2500. I’m not planning to use the truck off road so at the moment the plan is for some street friendly all Terain’s as it does snow a lot here and I want it to be a year round toy which is why I didn’t find a 2wd truck.

I believe that it was Skylarkgp. My first car (that I still have) is a 76 Skylark. I haven't been on that forum for years.
