I have a 1994 5.7 rcsb k1500 z71 the oil coller lines are leaking bad. I want to delete the oil cooler, can I take off the original horizontal oil filter adapter and remove the 2 fittings that the hoses clip into from the adapter and just put pipe plugs in them and put the adapter back on the engine. If so does anyone know the size of the plugs guessing ,3/8 /18 npt. Basically bypassing the cooler lines at the adapter by plugging them, will the oil still filter and circulate properly.I want to keep the horizontal adapter if possible for the added front driveshaft clearance.

Do i have to remove a bypass valve somewhere in the adapter if I plug the cooler line ports?I see 2 under the filter, one in the center under threaded portion of the filter and one exposed to the side of the threaded filter mount. Should i remove one of these bypass things ? If i had a non oil cooler adapter to look at it would help ,i would know what to do to mine , but i don't.

Just replace the lines with some a/c delco lines and be done with it for years to come. Or take the factpry lines to a place that builds hydraulic hoses and let them crimp hydraulic hose in place of the factory hoses.

Looking for a more economical route than replacing lines and have a supply of the horizonal filters,i dont tow with this truck so i dont need the cooler.I believe i have to take the bypass out of the center of the adapter behind the threaded filter screw on piece but not 100% sure.

Well there 2 thoughts on this and plenty of back and forth. My personal 2cents . If gm put them from the factory. Keep it. I get your reasons. It's your vehicle lol. But 350 474k miles , all mine original and been good knock on wood. It's a 2wd. But I rather keep it factory set up and add more then remove stuff for convenience. This truck hardly ever tows and doesnt carry 9 bodies everyday. Whenever I get my new dream motor my plan is to install new connections to prevent them from blowing. Since there original. Good luck. :)

I can tell you a story of crossing the finish line at a race with the 180*C temp gauge pegged (360*F+), mostly because the factory Jaguar oil cooler kept the rings from welding themselves to the block. I don't have an oil cooler on my truck, but I'm wanting to scrounge one.

I added one to my Express van. The larger radiator had the cooler and all I had to do was scrounge the adapter at the local pick and pull and buy new lines. Cleaned the adapter, ran the lines and hooked it all up. The oil temperature and therefore pressure stayed much more consistant after. No more 20 psi at idle after I had driven it for miles in 105°F weather at 80-85 mph.

The answer to my question looks to be you take out the bypass behind the oil filter screw on fitting and then that makes the oil cooler adapter internals the exact same as a non oil cooler adapter, plug the cooler line ports with 2 3/8"npt fittings and your in .Putting it on now. Thanks for the suggestions. I hope this helps someone else.I am going to put the cooler back in service the next oil change I will use fittings like 67 chevy mechanic did on the adapter instead of the quick connects and will cut the outer crimps off my lines and remove the bad hoses, then get new high quality hydraulic hose to slide on the barbs and double clamp with hose clamps. Also for anyone else doing new lines the top port on the adapter goes to the top of the radiator.Bottom port on oil filter adapter to bottom of radiator, top top bottom bottom.
