Mine a vortec. Stock tune. Nothing fancy. Engine has a rebuilt 355. With some mild mods. Been a while so couldn't tell you what all. All I remember is different cam, pistons, rockers/rollers , flexplate, heads. Might be just me but cant notice a different. When it croaks over I'm put a vortec 383 and tune. I know it doesn't answer you question. Just my input. I'm curious if anybody has a similar set up and if they have facts proving otherwise

Anyone have a 355 running in a 2wd that’s been on a chassis dyno? Curious on dyno numbers at the rear wheels.

185hp and 250tq was bone stock for my 97 L31. With weak valvesprings the 300 hp marine cam and intake along with an underdrive pulley and tri-y headers it made 230 hp and 304 tq. After a valve spring swap it made 257 hp and 310 tq. On E85 it went to 272 hp and 330 tq.

You remember what dyno? Was that a 1:1 pull?

I wasn’t too happy with my numbers but it did put down 318 hp and 332 tq. The pull was in 3rd (1.4:1) not a 4th (1:1). So it would have made a hair more if I wasn’t scared of throwing the driveshaft!

Stock pull was with a 4L60E and 8.5 10-bolt. 2nd gear and unlocked converter on a Mustang dyno.

Modified pulls were with a 4L85E and 9.5" 14-bolt, 2nd gear locked on a Dynojet that reads very similarly to the Mustang I tested on before. You can literally go to any other dynojet in town and gain 5-10% if numbers are a big deal to the person.

Also didn't want to toss the driveshaft.

318/332 is not too shabby. Is it a vortec truck intake, TBI or a carb?

My buddies heads/cam/long tube headers/trailblazer ss intake, 90mm TB, 4" CAI 6.0L only made 345hp and 314tq through an 80E and 8.5" 10-bolt. Its in a 97 ECSB and has run an 8.5x in the 1/8 mile in this Texas summer heat. 8.5 good for a mid 13 in the 1/4.

Yea, this was a “Land and Sea” dyno. The owner admitted that it reads lower than most other Dyno’s. Makes me feel better seeing those 6.0 numbers, especially a 6.0 with heads.

I’m running through an NV3500 though, so I have a little advantage there. Numbers wise at least.

What part of Texas? I’m in Central.

Damn.. my 383 with 9.7.1 & long tubes with stock vortec heads & 308 comp cam put down 255 & 330 at the wheels. That was with Holley Sniper EFI. It’s all gone as of today in lieu for an Edelbrock AVS2 Carb & MSD dizzy..

Stupid question for you guys...

I know next to nothing about dynos. What's the big deal with "tossing the driveshaft?" I'm guessing that it spinning that fast with no real resistance on it can be an issue?

Trucks have very long driveshafts (if you have a 1 piece shaft). The longer the driveshaft is, the lower its critical speed is. If you exceed the critical speed, the driveshaft starts to bend and that can cause it to snap.

Yea mines a 355 with Promaxx max series 190 heads, Edelbrock dual plane, AvS2 carb, xe268 cam with 1.6 roller rockers out a true dual exhaust. 10.3:1. I’m going to build a 383 short block at some point and have the heads ported/polished along with the intake. I’m hoping that’ll get me an extra 30 hp/tq.

Have you tuned in your AVS2? I’ve seen some vortec headed 355 that are about as quick as mine.
