I'm personally running dual Flowmaster 40's with shorty headers and hi-flow cats, 2.5" pipe in and 2.5" pipe out.

Headers aren't installed in either of these videos, the second video is on a lake, sound was a bit muffled from the snow, but you can hear I have a manifold leak in it.

40's WILL piss people off at full throttle, but as long as you keep it easy when you're near home, I doubt your neighbours will complain.

My setup has a bit of drone, nothing excessive, and this is the location of my mufflers:

Drone is not bad at all. Keep the mufflers as far back under the box as you can, and drone will be fine.

Exit also effects drone. Dumping it right after the mufflers underneath the truck for instance, will amplify the level of drone.

Mine exits like this:

For all of you saying Magnaflows sound like glasspacks, thats because they ARE a glasspack. http://www.magnaflow.com/wideopen/wideopen.asp

Magnaflows WILL get louder after a couple years. I have a buddy with almost the same setup as me on a 2009 5.3L (I know, totally different sound) except with dual magnaflows and an X-pipe.

Its one of the best sounding trucks I have EVER heard, hands down. But its gotten MUCH louder from the time the exhaust was installed to now.

I'm going with this setup on mine
http://youtu.be/lwkKedH724Q

Sounds pretty good, definitely too loud for my liking haha... You worried about how it'll sound on a v6 at all?

I run a FM 50 series 2.25" dual in/dual out with full tail pipes and I get very minimal drone inside the cab.
I did have the FM mounted as close to the rear diff as possible.

A 40 series might be a different story though.

I've heard some people complain about drone in the 50 series, but I doubt it's too bad. I've thought about going with a 50 series but I'm not sure if it's that much louder than my 70 series for it to be worth it

Do you know what inch magnaflows he runs? I'm seriously considering doing a magnaflow on my truck, which is why I ask. Also, thoughts on how much of a sound difference one magnaflow vs two there is? It would be far cheaper for me to do one magnaflow, especially given my current stainless setup under my truck

I fear my neighbors may complain a slight bit with the flowmaster 40's - they told me they heard my truck rumbling at 5 AM when I was going hunting, and all I have is a 70 series. I doubt it woke them up, my truck's not nearly that loud, but they did notice it.

That video I posted was on a 4.3 v6, same as I have. My headers will make it a bit more loud and raw though.

Also from my experience, any muffler will have less interior noise if it is mounted standing up or in the upright position over one that is mounted traditionally in the horizontal way, it's not a big difference but you can tell. Just my 2 cents.

Funny, seems you guys are confirming a lot of what I was seeing on YouTube. And that's that Magnaflows sound great sometimes but iffy others... thoughts on the cause of this? Could it solely whether there are cats present on the vehicle?

As for Flowmasters, I'm just worried about the drone... seems to be a universally accepted thing that flowmasters are gonna drone - my flowmaster doesn't drone cause I have a 70 series muffler, which is just a step above stock.

I will admit I detailed a 2004 cobra at work that had I believe hooker headers slp catless x pipe and magna packs. It sounded mean as hell. I think magnaflows might be meant for seriously loud v8's.

I have a 14 inch crossflow on 97. its very mellow almost stock at idle. But don't lay into it leaving your neighbors will hate you. It is a glass pack style in the sense that it uses absorbtion to muffler the sound you can see through it. I noticed more power around the board but mine has an x pipe in. Sounds like a performance sound. Rather than the deep aggressive sound of my 40 s

I've got magnaflows on my ''66 GTO. It sounds stock. Too weak for me. Maybe a little louder, but not any quality IMHO. I'm building a healthy 461ci pontiac motor for it now and hope it sounds better. Otherwise these magnaflow mufflers are history.

Interesting, I've never even thought of that. You learn something new everyday I suppose haha

I wasn't sure how I felt about the magnapacks, I'm sure they're loud but would you say they're too loud for a daily driver truck?

Just wondering, how mellow is it at idle? For example, if you're inside your house the trucks parked by the house and it's running, can you hear it? Cause I can barely hear mine inside the house, and I want it a little loud at idle

A FM 50 will be louder than a FM 70. Of course, video's aren't going to give you an idea on how loud a muffler is.
It was a specific tone I was after. My '96 sounds exactly like this '98.

I really need to make my own video's.

I know the flowmaster 50 is louder, but I'm wondering if it's noticeably louder to where it justifies the cost. Did you have the opportunity to test both in person by any chance?
