the jeep Cherokee shaft upgrade is simple job, both joints are steel, and smaller. put one on my '87 IROC and my '94 C1500.

Looks like the rag joint for my truck would be Lares 205. At least that's the only one listed on RockAuto. Not sure what year OP's truck is but this seems to cover most years. So to OP, I gotta ask, what do you think about trying the $17 rag joint first before spending $$$ on the steering gear?

The Jeep swap is not recommended for the trucks with EVO. These trucks have a different steering shaft set up. The EVO shafts have an extra section in them and with the u joint from a jeep, the steering shaft can get off center. Although this won't cause a wreck, it will effect your alignment. I think the first year of EVO is 97.
