I was just about to say the same....it may be a regional thing, I don't know. But I've recently gotten quotes to put a completely rebuilt 4L80E in a 4x4 for $1000.
Though as others said, the majority of that quote is likely labor, and it's not uncommon to find labor rates quoted at over $100/hour.
