Fuel pump replacement

I was thinking on the old ones I’ve changed, the sending unit and fuel pump were a single unit. Am I mistaken?

I just bought the pump kit itself. I don't know for sure but a sending unit from a 96 might fit, IIRC. Someone else is gonna have to confirm this.

You remove the sending unit and the pump is at the bottom of the sending unit. Just tap the lock ring around to disengage it and the whole unit lifts out of the top of the tank. If you have compressed air it's a good idea to blow the top of the tank off thoroughly beforehand to keep dirt from falling down into the tank

Yes it does, simple replacement with that kit I posted.

Edit: I was thinking you wanted to replace the sending unit too since you're trying to fix your gauge.

Yes, I’m assuming I need to replace the sending unit too, but won’t know until I get it out to test it.

What I have discovered is that the old sending unit only comes as a single unit, pump and sender. So you can change the pump and re-use the old sender. But you can’t buy just the TBI sending unit without the pump. So in order to replace my sending unit and replace my pump with a vortec, I’d have to buy a TBI Sending unit/pump combo plus a vortec pump to swap with the TBI pump.

Thank you. I ended up finding a NOS sender without pump off Ebay. GM called it the fuel metering unit in my parts catalog. Now I’m trying to find a vortec pump that’s not made in communist china.

Yes, it’s getting damned near impossible. GM might as well make it official and move all their factories over there too.

Somehow I don’t trust a $39.99 fuel pump off Amazon, even if the box does say AC Delco.
