Eaton lockers. Good? Bad? Weaknesses? Performance?
Eventually(probably this fall) I will be pulling the 355 out of ElCie and putting it in my 91. The engine makes around 400hp. The 91 is GU4 open and I want to keep the 3.08 gear but I want to lose the one wheel wonder. I've been reading that the govloc can only take and do so much. I'm probably gonna treat it like a redheaded stepchild. I stumbled across an Auburn Gear locker which I believe is a limited type chunk. Has anybody tried one of these and how did it hold up? The $165 price tag makes me a little wary.

You're gonna beat on it but you wanna keep the 3.08?

Mostly I'd ditch the whole thing just because it's a 10 bolt. An assumption of course that we're dealing with a 1500 here, yeah?

Only problem with upgrading to 14 bolt is that I think 3.42 is lowest they came from GM.

I have a TracRite from AAM in my 10 bolt with 3.42s and I'm pulling about 300hp and have no issues. Talked with my axle guy and he says with the TracRite the 10 bolt should take up to about 500hp. I'm thinking if you have a 700R behind the 355 it will give before the 10 bolt.

Not gonna beat on it that hard,at least not abusive. It's not gonna be a race truck. That 355 is currently hooked up to a TH350 and a set of 270 gears with 81 inches of tire and it gets gone right now. I've never timed it but I'm guessing my 0-60 is about 3sec. These 700R4's have a lower 1st and 2nd so I think I can run the 3.08's,have good street performance and fuel economy when I'm not standing on it. I will be rebuilding the tranny and making any HD upgrades like I did with my TH 350. The only shift upgrades I did to the 350 was polish the spool valves,remove the second and high accumulator springs and change the governor springs and weights. No shift kit or drilling the separator plate. Nice crisp shifts without being abusive. You don't need to lower your gears with a well tuned tranny. The taller its gear ratio,the longer its legs!!!

I've been reading that the govloc can only take and do so much.
The 9.5" and larger Gov-Lock is reasonably durable. The 8.5" and smaller Gov-Locks have a poor reputation.

OTOH, the 8.5" axle in a full-size truck has a poor reputation. Even the "open" differentials explode.

4.11 in my 14 bolt axle with G80. (99 Suburban C2500 5.7 with 8 lug hubs).
Fairly certain that in this case, the desired "low" ratio is low numerically--3.08--rather than low-gear/high numerical.

The higher the number(ratio),the lower the gear.
4.56=low
2.70=high
Just like in the tranny low gear is say 2.5 and second gear is say 1.5 we consider second to be higher then first even though the ratio number of first is higher.
