Actually, depending on what stock block you decided to build the 383 off of, the 4" or the 3.9" 350 block, then the 400 crank will give different results....ofcourse it probably requires an aftermarket 400 crank to work with the 1pc rear main blocks.

I've only had experience with certain combinations of the sbc engines:

377ci: 4" bore x 3.75" stroke
372ci: 4.125" bore x 3.48" stroke
383ci: 4.030" bore x 3.75" stroke
377ci: 4.155" bore x 3.48" stroke

There are also the rarely built 388(4.060" bore x 3.75" stroke) and the 392(4.080" bore x 3.75" stroke). So yeah, there are alot of options if you don't get the already-prepped 383 blocks. Good Luck in your build, when you decide on the route you wanna go, keep us informed....we need DETAILS!!! and sexy pics of the engine being built is a plus. :)

Well I think ive been talked into a crate motor... Not Stock by anymeans. Mainly becasue of time as I work 6 days a week (most weeks). I still plan on running tbi on whatever crate motor i decide on. Any suggestions?? Also im curious about my stock 4l60e im not really in the budget to rebuild that just yet. It has a little over 60,000 original miles on it now. How much hp and torque can it hold before it starts to give out?

I am going with the 350/290 its the old school motor. I am undecided whether to buy the kit that comes dressed with carb and intake for 2600$ and run it carbed or buy the base motor for 1700$ and run the tbi. any suggestions?

Would a stock 350 tbi and intake be a good combo for this motor? or would I need a bigger tbi?

I have that exact crate motor in my 2DR Blazer, and the stock TBI hasn't had any problem's keeping up with it, although I would sugget that you get a new tuned chip from somewhere like TBI chip's etc.

x2 I have that exact motor in my truck as well and it runs pretty good. I did put an Edelbrock TBI intake on mine when I put the engine in though so I couldn't tell you if thats what made the difference or not but I have not had any issues with it in over 35k miles but I do maintain it very well.

Haha, I'd say what made the noticeable difference were the heads.
