Newbie here all. Having a custom 383 being built for my truck. But right now my main issue is in rebuilding the tbi pressure regulator. Yes it has been chipped. Upon disassembly of the regulator there was a spacer used under the diagram..... To increase/decrease pressure not sure. Seeing the regulator is unadjustable. Any thoughts? The spacer is far left old diaphragm middle new right. Should I put it back in?? Will discuss motor specs soon. Thank you

Greetings Taz069,

1) Given that you are putting together a 383ci SBC ballparked at 425/425 with ? pistons, ? cam, ? heads,
etc., it sounds to me that you are a perfect candidate for an adjustable fuel pressure setup per Schurkey's
comments above. Failing that, possibly an aftermarket setup like these Marine guys offer? (LINK)

2) In addition to an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, maybe you also need to increase
the lbs/hr rating of the injectors that you are going to use?

3) Given the HP/Torque numbers you are expecting to make, these seem to overlap what
the TBI 454ci trucks were making? (At least the torque specs, anyway.) If this is what your
engine guy is really putting together for you, then instead of the original 350 TBI setup
becoming a potential pinch point, why not go from the original twin 1 11/16" bore size
up to the 2" bores (& matching 80 or 90 lb/hr injectors) that came with the big block?

****

It sounds like you are putting together a nice powerplant. If you are going with a 'chipped'
computer purely as a starting point & you are going to dial it in from there you should be
able to have the best of all worlds. (ie: More power/torque + factory driveability/manners.)

On the other hand, if your 'tuner' is going to handle getting this dialed in remotely, this could
take several iterations to getting it right. Perhaps one of the TBI tuner gurus in this forum
could share their experiences on what they did in your situation.

My 1st gmt400 was an 89 that I had to put an engine into. I stupidly built my own motor, a 350 with 10.5:1 compression, edelbrock heads/cam/intake. I got an adapter that converted squarebore carb to tbi, then plopped a 454 throttle body onto it. It ran quite respectable for a redneck hack job!
Your tuner is correct, the 350 throttle body will be extremely difficult to tune. Perhaps you can adapt a 454 throttle body onto it and have them tune for that? If tuned correctly, it'll put a grin on your face that lasts for miles!

Hey CumminsFever,

You beat me to it -- the larger 454 TBI setup seems like a natural upgrade for a 383ci SBC making BBC kind of power...

yes to vacuum referenced FPR, i would get some early 454 injectors if you can find them. will need to find a good tuner which will be tough...

I don't see a "spacer". I see a "spring seat". The bottom of the spring seat sits on top of the adjuster screw. Of course it goes back in.

The regulator IS adjustable, IF (big IF) you can remove the weld/silver solder/melted-metal mess that GM installed to make it "tamper-proof".

There's instructions all over the Web for removing that stuff, and then turning the adjustment screw. "It's easy" they say.

So far, I've wrecked three regulators trying to accomplish that.

Here's one I broke the entire bottom out of. (And another of a totally-different design I haven't screwed-up...yet.)

Thank you. My pressure regulator rebuild didn't come with that spring seat as you call it. I will put it in when I reassemble it. Thank you again.

The builder went with the promaxx aluminum heads 2.02 intake, 1.60 exhaust flows 280. Pistons are weisco .30 over tru street fordged. The specifics on the cam I haven't got all information yet. Builder said close to .500 lift. Lobe separation I have no clue yet.

Paging @PlayingWithTBI

I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, what you really need is an EBL Flash.

Yes, I have a bored 46mm TB with an AFPR and 18LB spring running 20psi, on a 1304 intake bored to 48mm, and EBL. I’m getting 12.5 AFR at WOT and 5700 RPM. It’s only giving me ~90% KPa MAP but seems happy. The EBL is the way to go with 4 second flashes and Learn VE. I already have over 50 flashes “Playing “ with it. IMHO a VRFPR is needed for a bigger 7.4L squirter. You just need a little more air through it.

Note: the EBL can tune with a WBO2 also for better resolution

Her we go all. Not sure if this cam will get me 425/425. But should be close I pray. Builder won't say until it is assembled. Cam specs... Engine tech, bump stick stage 1. Lobe separation 110, lift 295 intake, 500 exhaust. @ .50 intake 217/ 225 exhaust. It is to be a hydrolic roller. Shorty headers for now, long tubes next year. No more clutch fan, pic included. Harold Sharp roller rockers. New higher amp alternator, haven't decided yet but if I ever get a bumper winch..... Please let me know on the cam specs. Thank you all
