It's supposed to rain all week, but this morning it was clear out. I checked the bolts on the transfer case, couldn't get a comfortable turn on them with a wrench so they aren't loose. Decided to switch gears and work on the airbox mount. After a while of cramming it in and feeling around, I noticed this pop-in plastic sticky-outy bit is cushioned like it's meant to dampen vibration and have a light load:

It's located over a pre-existing hole in the fender, I basically just need a spacer that can sit in and be connected to the fender.

So I went out to the satellite shop where I keep my end mill and horizontal boring machines:

I had some dead tree round stock, but it split in half when I hit it with the step bit so I had to dig into my billet wood-I-found-outside-but-brought-inside pile. I drilled a 5/8" hole on one side, and 3/8" on the other, exactly in the center:

Inserted some fine Grade 0 hardware:

And I'll tell you what, it fits in there so nice:

I dunno you guys, we might be going to SEMA with this one.

I think I have an extra one of those laying around. I am intrigued by that plug though, may have to steal that idea. The little resonator box wanted to be where my plow solenoid is so I had to do something about that. I'd been leaning toward a shot of that expanding foam insulation myself.

The factory bracket/mount is a piece of rectangular steel tube, that has a slot in it for the Christmas tree looking deal that you made the big hole for. The bottom side (both of the mounts are on the longer sides of the rectangle) has a hole for a self tapping body screw, and a locator tab that goes in a slot in the inner fender.
The collision repair shop lost this piece on my Burb's air cleaner box, and I found a few spare ones at the local yard. I can get a picture of it in the next few days, next time I'm out at my shop building. Got three days off in a row, and the weather is supposed to be decent, so maybe the boys can get some needed attention.
That's how GM did the job, but your solution looks like a good alternative. As long as the wood doesn't get wet and crack....

That plug is a Dorman 570-005, fits tight and isn't terribly offensive looking.

That makes sense. It's on my junkyard list, I figure there has to be one lurking under an airbox somewhere. I think my endgame airbox is ultimately a diesel unit because it points the hole in the right direction, but this gets me on the road with filtered air until then.

It is the day before tires. Last chance to find whatever it is that's going to prevent me from making it about 10 miles out. I air up the flat rears for the last time and fire it up.

Took it on the 3 mile test loop, no change in any behaviors. This was the first run with the air cleaner on. My janky intake tube concoction shifted around a little but it seems like it's holding. Rear tire breaks traction at 9% throttle up a mild wet hill according to my tps gauge on the controller. Fairly confident that if there ever was a locking mechanism in this rear diff, it ain't there no more.

I got my jack in the cab and everything I need to change a tire. Battery for the inflator is on the charger. The dry graphite razzle dazzle I gave the door locks a month ago has worked, I can lock and unlock both sides without severe embarrassment.

A month ago I watched Erik's junkyard toolbox video:

and compared what he's got versus what I keep in my emergency kit. A full set of 3/8" sockets and a couple wrenches to complete my set and I think I'm as prepped as I'm going to get.

I'll see what I can do with the fresh units, these tires are so hard and cracked I'm concerned they'll explode. It was like driving on ice today, I had to pedal it 3 times and I was trying to take it easy.
