I've never seen one in a 400 but I have in square bodies.

I think the early GMT400s had 2.XXs. My BIL has a '91 and I think that's what it had. Actually, the truck got handed down to his son (my nephew) and he just regeared it. He had 2.73s I think he said.

Didn't the early GMT400s have the TH400? Numerically lower axle ratio was due to transmissions not having 4th gear (overdrive gear) on those trucks. I don't believe these trucks ever had had the TH350, so not sure why early trucks would have numerically lower gear ratios on trucks with 700R4.

That’s right about the TH400. Then came the 4L60. That was my concern about sticking 2.73s with my 4L60E. I think I’d be lugging my motor.

How many teeth on the ring gear?

Looking back at my old parts truck inventory even the non-O/D stuff I had came with 3.08's - '88 5.7 with the SM465 manual for example. Beyond that a '91 with 5.7/5 speed combo had 3.08, several 4.3/700R4 trucks with 3.08...

That 5.7/5 speed/3.08 truck ran really well, btw, and was still a bit of a dog to drive thanks to the gearing.
