Look for heavy duty K1500 and light duty K2500. The light duty K2500s are easy to spot because they are 2500s with 6 lug wheels. But look for a 6 lug with a 14 bolt cover. Make sure its from a 4wd so you'll have the right width.
Only part not already addressed:
88-98/9.. exactly as you'd expect.

I just bought a 97 Silverado 1/2 ton Z71 and it has a 14 bolt rear end. The guy I bought it from didnt say anything about it. So my questions are did some half tons come stock with 14 bolt rear ends and if it was stock did that most likely come with a 4L60E or could it have came with a 4L80E?

it was a option to get the 9.5 rear, only 1/2 ton to get 4l80e was 91-93 454ss and 91+ diesels with the s code 6.5

Easy way to tell if you're 60e or 80e, look at the pan. square is 60e, rectangular with one corner clipped is 80e. That eliminates any guesswork caused by guys like us who are constantly fiddling with ****, swapping parts, etc.

Alright i have 3:42s and am going to 32" tires soon. Im guesssing the best gear is a 4:10? For all round performance. And i also have a extra 10 bolt lim slip dif from a 8 5/8" s10....will this work in my 98 hoes rear? Change the spiders for the bigger axles? Sure hope so, bought the clutch pack kit from gm and sold s10.

My stock tires on my 98 measure a little over 31" (265-75r16) if you going to a tire that is adding less than an inch of diameter, 3.73:1 would be ideal. Sensibly speaking, I'm thinking 4.10:1 might be a little deep for a daily driver. Your acceleration will be great, but your highway cruising economy will bring the suck.

does anybody know what the max hp a stock axle can handle? im planing on swapping out my 350 in my 95 1500 with an ls1. im sure it can handle that but i would also like in the future to throw a turbo on it. im thinking of having around 450hp total. can the rear end handle that with stock components?
