do these rectangulars have to be open? because there's no matching ports on the heads. and if not where does the exhaust gas enters the EGR from?

Yes, they are connected to the EGR and the port which feeds it. You need to scrape all the carbon deposits out of there until you can easily blow air through all 3 ports. I answered your question about this on the other thread. How about we stick with one thread?

So the 2 little ports under the EGR valve- when the manifold is mounted how does the gas gets from them to the intake if the head blocks them?
