I decided I didn't like how bad the gmt400 turn lights were after driving around and seeing how poor the visibility was on other trucks when turning. The difference in lighting intensity between the turn/brake filament and the night time filament is marginal at best. Given the fact that I have bright fog/reverse lamps built into my bumper, I went ahead and planned a way to add amber lights in.

Here are the steps to add in the mod:
  • Once the circuit board is off the taillight, dremel or cut away at the 12v reverse trace to provide a surface which one can solder to later. Do the same for the brake/turn circuit.
  • Now cut into the 12v reverse trace until the trace is broke. I used a dremel with a thin cutting wheel to accomplish this.
  • Solder to the now broken 12v reverse trace on the bulb side, NOT the 12v live side. Do the same for the brake/turn trace.
  • Solder a wire connecting the two and reassemble taillight.
If one ever decides to return the tailight function back to stock, all that is required is to remove the wire and solder bridge the 12v reverse trace.

Just throwing this out there because you reminded me of some research I did ages ago. In Brazil (and possibly other countries) these trucks came from the factory with different tail light assemblies which had an amber turn signal. I'm sure the wiring is different, and I never did find a reliable way to get any of this stuff into the country (was trying to get some of the headlights), but if I were ever going to do a mod like this I'd look into these.

It's interesting for sure. I wouldn't spend the time to do it though.

What's different about the head/park lights?

The parking lights, not so much from what I recall. The headlights are awesome though. Really nice reflector and lens design, and a separate 194 bulb as a DRL instead of double duty for the low beam.

Wow that's really nice. I have heard of the Brazilian taillights which is what inspired me to do this (plus I was bored). The low beam reflector remind me of the 88-89 style Bosch headlamps pattern.
