I'm finishing up my '96 stepside build, and am in process of installing disc brakes in rear from AZProPerformance. When I opened up the diff cover, dark brown gear oil came out, looked horrible. The magnet on the diff cover had some decent size metal chunks, and the spiders are definately worn. I'm thinking this is a good time to get rear axle rebuilt, and likely a gear change. I'm running 29" tire in the rear.

Can anyone recommend a rear axle rebuilder (performance oriented) in Houston ? Also, I'm running a cammed L31, 0411, 24x ignition - and 3.42 gears. I'm thinking of upgrading gear sets to 3.73, 3.90, or maybe even 4.11. Also have a Yukon LSD ready to be installed. Can anyone recommend a rebuilder and recommendations on gear set. sc/sb, 4L60e. Thanks in advance.

Maybe check with a local transmission shop? Most also rebuild rear ends.

Those 4x4 parts places also do regears all the time for guys installing large tires and needing regearing. 4 Wheel Parts?

Any one of those ratios should be fine for you. It really depends on what you are doing with your truck. Is this a daily driver or dedicated track vehicle?

Yes sir been burning up the gear calculators. I’m building this to be a street/sport truck. Plan on road tripping it also, so expecting plenty of highway usage. Here are a few pics

Also, I've got the 4L60e, which shows to have 4th gear ratio of 0.75. So, with 4.11 gears, I'm coming up with 2700rpm at 75mph. Not sure I want to be turning that much rpm going down the highway. But I know it would be real fun around town. Conversely, seems like I will be leaving performance on the table by only going up to 3.73. decisions decisions....

Dropped the axle off at Pyle Bros today. Went with 3.73. Chance said 3.90 makes a lot of noise.

I'm turning ~2800 @ 80 with 4.11s and 275/60R15 and it's fun all over the spectrum :anitoof:

Is it just a 3.90 thing? My 4.11s are nice and quiet
