ok then I'm waiting. I'm going for direct swap not more headaches than the engine and gear decisions have been. :hmm:

Do you not have any U-pull-it type yards local to you? The yards up here are littered with 88-98 GM trucks and I can get 10 bolts for around $95 anytime. I got lucky once and got the diff from a 92 2wd Suburban that has maybe 5000 miles on it since a complete rebuild with new gears( 3.42) axles, and an Auburn LSD. All for $95. That's a one in a lifetime for me I don't doubt however.

What would be the biggest difference I would notice between the 2 sets of gears. also i'm thinking about putting a bigger set of tires on the rear after the engine swap which one would be better in that case.

Well with a bigger tire, it makes your gears seem smaller for instance, going from stock size to a 33 in tire will make 3.73's more like 3.42's, and just the opposite with shorter tire, going from stock size to a tire that is 25 inches tall will make 3.73's more like 3.90's, I was using a stock 2wd 235/75 15 for reference here.

ok that was a big help looks like i may need to run 3.73's in the truck and van both.

But lets say i was to run a 265 or 275 either 70/75 series on the back of the truck would it make much difference between the .42's and the .73's. I keep asking these questions so i can get the better ratio for the truck but also to keep my gas mileage good.

With that big of a tire I would prob. go for 3.73, we have a 2wd burb with 3.73's, and at 70 were doing 2250 rpm, not bad at all, and that's with a stock size tire, you would be doing even less with the larger tires.

yea your right cause right now mine runs between 1300-1400 at about 60mph. so now i guess 3.42's are out and i'm gonna look for 3.73's and if i need to change the rpm range i'll just change tire size. since thats less of a ***** to change then put in .42s and not like them then have to find another rear end
